with the vice president and rsvp'ing that they would attend the meeting, that is sucking up all of the beltway's attention on this effort so far. it's not surprising given that the nra has already offered that their solution to the gun violence problem in this country is more guns in more places where we don't have them already. and that is not really where we expect the white house effort to be headed. but what is more interesting this time, what is more interesting about this effort is how many other people besides the nra are at the table with some political weight behind them. the kind of political capital that they have and are bringing to bear to compete with the gun lobby whose political power has long been feared, but who this year, frankly, has devolved into a nationally reviled political punch line. joining us now is my pal steve schmidt. he is a republican senior strategist from the mccain/palin ticket in '08, msnbc analyst. steve, thank you for being here. good to see you. >> good to see you, rachel. happy new year. >> you too. i know you are a supporter of gun rights, steve. i know

it was their reporting that we flagged early last week when we said hey, beltway, wake up. this is happening. since that, since we're trying to draw people's attention to it, the coverage of it really has taken off. it began percolating the very next day on some of the more influential lefty blogs. think progress, daily coast, talking points memo. from there it ended up hitting the mainstream. the associated press ran with this headline late last week, republicans eye new election laws. the inside the beltway news organizations then started to run their own stories on this plan. this was the front page above the fold headline in the "washington post" today. look at that. front page, above the fold, right-hand column. "gop is pushing electoral changes. virginia among states at issue." it's now becoming big national news. and then tonight, the big kahuna, it hit the national newscasts. >> seeing red. a push by republicans to change the way we elect a president. if these had been the rules across the map in november, we'd have president romney. >> if the whole country adopted

so maybe by 3:00 you're starting to see flurries west side of the beltway. it comes through with quite a flash and a little dusting here to an inch or 2. look at 7:00, though. we're starting to see it pull out of town. by 11:00 i think most of it's over and we're getting clearing. so it will be fast, but again with that cold air it will be able to stick to a lot of places. how about accumulation totals? i think i've said over and over the inch or 2 maybe right around in this area gets somewhere closer to the inch. again i think those higher totals toward the mountains where the lake effect snow will continue to keep the snow piling up out there and in places like garrett county might get 8 inches. for the rest of us here is your fox 5 accuweather seven-day forecast. it's going to be a photo op and an opportunity to be super careful during the evening rush hour as this is moving through. so maybe allow extra time, change of plans, stay downtown for a bit till this gets through the area. saturday and sunday 34 to 37. next week looks warmer including getting up

the beltway press is enthralled by that mystique. but apparently speaking, that mystique is kind of hard to justify. you know how the sunlight foundation added up political spending in this past election to see who got the most bang for their buck in their political spending? it was really bad on the right. the republican party's house campaign committee spent almost $65 million, but only 32% of what they spent went to campaigns in which their candidate was successful. so two-to-one, their money was spent on losing. it was worse for the republican party's senate campaign. for their investment of $32 million, only 24% paid off in terms of races that went the way they wanted to. three to one, their money was spent losing. freedomworks was about the same. and the chamber of commerce, which is supposed to be such an impressible and unassailable campaign juggernaut, the chamber of commerce spent $32 million, but less than 7% of what they spent went to winning candidates they wanted to win, or against losing candidates that they wanted to
